This is what John the Baptist proclaimed:
“One mightier than I is coming after me.
I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals.
I have baptized you with water;
he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
It happened in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee
and was baptized in the Jordan by John.
On coming up out of the water he saw the heavens being torn open
and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him.
And a voice came from the heavens,
“You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”
Mark 1:7-11
Today (technically) we reflect on the moment when Jesus was acknowledged by his cousin John the baptist. John was a man who was very faithful to God and a lot of people looked up to him. Although, he told the people that one greater than Him was on the way, but in actuality He was infront of him being baptized. Jesus Christ, the savior was being baptized with water to wash away his inequities, but in return Jesus will bring forth to us, the Holy Spirit. In the gospel of Matthew it was said that, “..John tried to prevent him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and yet you are coming to me?”Jesus said to him in reply, “Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed him (Matthew3:14-15.) John refused to baptize Jesus, not because he was did not want to do it, he felt that he was unworthy and in reply he asked Jesus to baptize him instead. However, when Jesus insisted John to perform the baptism, I see it as Jesus humbling himself (similar to how Mary Magdalene washed his hair) and informing John that the duty of a righteous service must be exercised by anyone who is called to do so. Jesus gave John a calling to perform his service and thus John did was was commanded by the savior.
After Jesus was baptized, the skies opened up and the voice of the father proclaimed Jesus and God said, “Behold, for this is My son, for who I am well pleased!” If I was there to witness such a beautiful and monumental moment, I would probably cry for days on out. The father of time, the name above all other names, the creator, etc. blessed us with his voice and proved to us that Jesus is His son and he is the lamb of God, who will baptize us with the Holy Spirit. I’m getting a little emotional because today I remember my grandmother who passed away when I was a senior in high school. I can only hope that she is looking up from heaven saying, “behold, this is my grand son, for who I am well pleased!”
God Bless!
